A Mindful Doctor on Humility

Humility is a value I admire in others, and is something I would like to develop more in myself.

To start with I need to learn to cast off the cloak of arrogance and glamour, and be content with being a nobody. Only then I will truly be free to be my true self.

I can remember my father saying to me as a child, ‘Stop showing off.’  He meant the sort of pride which boasts of ones own achievements, which is really the opposite of the virtue of humility. Yet to have pride in my achievements, and even celebrate them, enhances my self esteem.  I can do that with humility by acknowledging others that have contributed to any success.  Going forward I have no need to identify with my past achievements or positions held.

If I act with the right intention and use my talents and gifts without concern for praise or reward, any self importance and arrogance will be minimal.

I recently came across some useful guidelines for practising humility which I am going to try and follow.

  1. Spend more time listening rather than doing the talking.
  2. Give other people credit.
  3. Admit when you’re wrong.
  4. Go last.
  5. Ask for advice.
  6. Praise others.
  7. Give compliments.
