The Nature of Personal Reality
by Jane Roberts
Subtitled: ’Specific Practical Techniques for Solving Everyday Problems and Enriching the Life You Know.’ (Prentice Hall)
Dorothy Jane Roberts (1929-1984) was an American author, poet and spirit medium. She published a series of books known as ‘the Seth Material’. These books were profoundly influential in the formulation of the New Age philosophies of the late 20th century and are still highly relevant to the understanding our spiritual nature.
The books were written while Roberts was in a trance-like state and were said to be the communications of a non-human entity named ‘Seth’. These messages covering a wide range of spiritual topics were written down and transcribed by her husband, Robert Butts. Roberts does not claim to write any of these books. She claims only to be the channel for the wisdom and information of the entity, Seth, whose aim was to enlighten and instruct humanity about their divine spiritual nature and their spiritual birthright.
The theme of ‘The Nature of Personal Reality’ is to demonstrate how we create our personal reality through our conscious beliefs about ourselves, others and the world around us. Hence, when we change our belief system, we change how we experience reality. This puts us in control of our lives. “We are Gods couched in creaturehood. We are given the ability to form our experience as our thought and feelings become actualized…….Trust the miracle of your own being. Make no divisions between the physical and the spiritual in your lifetimes, for the spiritual speaks with a physical voice, and the corporeal body is the creation of spirit” (Jane Roberts speaking for Seth).
The central message of this remarkable book is that we are not at the mercy of our unconscious drives, blind fate or a disjointed deity. We can consciously be masters of our own destiny. Seth teaches that the events in our lives are created in line with our conscious beliefs. He suggests many techniques and exercises to apply to whatever difficulties we may find ourselves in. We can create our own reality, according to Seth, through our conscious awareness of our spiritual nature and the power of our creative mind.
Every self-help book that has ever been written has based its ideas on the teachings of Seth. ‘The Nature of Personal Reality’ should be compulsory reading for anyone consciously following a path of spiritual development. It is an inspirational book.
